What is a Frenectomy?

The frenum is the small connecting piece of tissue between your lips and jaw. It is also the tissue that attaches your tongue to your lower jaw.

Lips and Jaw

Some people have a large frenum that reaches between the two upper front teeth. This can prevent the space between the two front teeth from closing in a growing child. In adults who have had braces, a large upper frenum can cause the gap between the two front teeth to re-open. In these instances, Dr. Lai can perform a procedure called a frenectomy, which means the removal of some of this tissue.

Tongue

In some cases, people have a tongue frenum large enough that it restricts the movement of the tongue, which can affect speech. This is sometimes referred to as being “tongue tied.” This tissue can be trimmed, also known as a frenectomy, to allow a more natural movement of the tongue.

How is a Frenectomy Performed?

A frenectomy can be performed with a laser or with traditional methods. In both cases the recovery is quick and there is little discomfort. Discuss with your dentist whether this is a good choice for you or your child. For more information call for a consult with Dr. Lai at any one of our Colorado dental offices.
